Headteacher: Miss E Simmons

Our pupils are what make Crabtree Junior School special. We have eight classes, each with 32 children. During their time at Crabtree there are lots of opportunities to hold positions of responsibility, starting with the rota for register monitors in each class and leading up to the elected roles of Head Boy and Head Girl.

Head Boy and Head Girl

In the autumn term of each academic year, self-nominations are invited from Year 6 pupils for the posts of Head Boy and Head Girl. The nominees prepare an assembly presentation to explain why they think they would be suitable for the role and then all pupils have a vote in the election. The Head Boy and Head Girl for 2018-19 are Alfie and Olivia. They are role models for the rest of the school and have various responsibilities, including leading the school council and organising the assembly music rota.

School Council

At the beginning of the year, each class elects two school councillors - a boy and a girl - and attend meetings twice a term, facilitated by Mrs Williams, to discuss ideas from the pupils for improving our school. Two meetings per year are joint meetings with representatives from the Infants' School. There is a photoboard outside the School Office showing the year's school council reps.

Houses were introduced in 2011; previously Crabtree had only used house colours for sports day but now there are house events throughout the year and children can also earn house points for good behaviour or work in the classroom. Sports Day is the culminating event, at the end of which the House with the most points is award the House Cup.

The Houses all colours:

  • Blue
  • Red
  • Green
  • Yellow

The House Captains are chosen by the Headteacher and, for 2018-19, are: Nina, George, Katie, Charlotte, Ella, Teddy, Carys & Rafferty.

Each of the houses has a chosen charity and organises a fund raising event. This year, the children are supporting: BBC Children in Need, Crisis, The Dogs Trust and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Sports captains

There are sports captains for all the main sporting disciplines. These children help Mrs Tizard with team selection and ensuring that everyone knows about training dates etc.

There are also trained sports leaders amongst the Year 6 pupils, who help lead lunchtime play sessions for the younger children.

Tuck shop

There is a tuck shop selling healthy snacks and drinks at morning break from Tuesday to Friday. The Tuck Shop is run by Year 5 and 6 pupils who are elected to the role and are supervised by Mrs Williams. The children stock take, place orders, receive and package new stock, 'man' the trolley and prepare the banking. Have a look at the 'menu' here.

Eco squad

The Eco squad is a recent initiative whose initial aim is to improve paper recycling at Crabtree Junior but also to look at wider 'green' issues. This group is overseen by Mrs Bath.

Achievement awards

At the end of each academic year, there is an achievement assembly where awards are presented to the Head Boy, Head Girl and each of the House Captains but there are also boy and girl Sports Awards for the upper and lower schools, Music, Art and perhaps most importantly the Pupil Choice awards: these awards are related to the social curriculum and are given for general helpfulness and attitude throughout the school year, with the recipients being nominated by the rest of their class.
